Raw material seasonality and global market cycle
The global cashew market follows a clear seasonal pattern:
January–February: start of the African season (Tanzania, Mozambique);
February–May: peak global supply (Africa, Vietnam, India, Cambodia);
June–August: off-season, market supported by inventories;
September–December: Brazil supplies and preparation for the next African season.
This sourcing structure allows Vietnam to maintain consistent output regardless of seasonal fluctuations.
Processing and grading
Raw cashew nuts imported into Vietnam undergo a full processing cycle:
cleaning and heat treatment;
sorting and grading;
formation of commercial lots.
Standard commercial grades include 180, 240, 320, 400, 450 and others. By-products and broken grades are widely used in the confectionery and food industries.
Whole graded kernels are supplied either for roasting or sold directly as finished products to international markets.
Vietnam’s position in the global cashew industry
While cashew processing originally developed in India, Vietnam has surpassed India in terms of processing volume and export capacity. Indian production remains largely focused on the domestic market, whereas Vietnam is predominantly export-oriented.
African countries historically supplied raw cashew only. Large-scale local processing has developed there only in recent years, while Vietnam benefits from decades of technical expertise and industrial experience.
